Steven Zhai is a Canadian pianist and piano educator based in Markham. He is an RCM Gold Medalist and holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Toronto. He is currently a faculty member with the University of Toronto Children’s Piano Pedagogy Program, where he works with and mentors the next generation of young pianists.
Steven’s teaching focuses on building strong fundamentals, musical understanding, and long-term progress. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether that is learning for enjoyment, exams, or advanced performance training. He combines classical training with flexible repertoire, including anime, video game, and popular music, alongside standard classical works.
Steven completed his Bachelor of Music Education and Certificate in Piano Pedagogy at the University of Toronto, followed by his Master of Music under Dr. Megan Chang.
His undergradute research on Anime Piano Music won the Peter and Patricia Shannon Wilson Research Prize. His graduate work explores how Anime Piano Music repertoire can support piano education and student engagement.
